“Autonomy over our own bodies is as pressing an issue as ever right now. Escapism: The Female Gaze asks what freeing ourselves from the male gaze looks like in our communities, physical places, and mental spaces. Can we ever be rid of its influence entirely? This show reflects our current reality–determined by male power and entitlement–while also exploring escapism as a positive force for resistance and revolution. We are learning to reimagine ourselves in control and seeing through our own eyes instead of as outside observers quietly looking in. We are escaping from the responsibility of male pleasure. What is erased only emphasizes what is left.”
